Meridian Healthcare exhibits at IHIMA Show

by Guillermo Fernandez 27. April 2010 05:50

With a fresh look and prime booth location, hundreds stop by to visit Meridian Healthcare at the IHIMA Show.

For many in the healthcare field, Van Ausdall & Farrar is know for its expertise in the area of dictation equipment and transcription systems.  For ten years Meridian Healthcare has also quietly built a solid reputation providing outsourced transcription to hospitals.  Most customers know that these two companies share the same headquarters, principal ownership, account management, technical resources and even some administrative staff members.  Even so, on April 19th many Medical Record Directors and other healthcare professionals attending the IHIMA Show in Indiana where surprised to see a different occupant in the traditional space just inside the entry door to the exhibit hall.

The 10' by 20' trade show space that has been occupied by a Van Ausdall & Farrar exhibit for decades was the debut location for a combined marketing effort that is hoped will simplify understanding a bit for organizations that aren't familiar with Meridian and Van Ausdall.  The brand new trade show booth bares the equally new logo of Meridian Healthcare Solutions.  "We're all things pertaining to healthcare documentation and want to express this to our customers as a single corporate image", said David Moore, Vice President and General Manager with Van Ausdall and a Principal Owner of Meridian Healthcare Solutions.  "We want people to understand that whether they desire a premise-based system or custom outsourced solution, we have the experience to get it done."

Meridian Healthcare opened their new booth on Tuesday morning to large crowds that were interested in catching up with some of the account associates working in the booth.  It's likely they were also interested in something else according to David Moore.  "We decided to do things right by giving away an Apple I-Pad and Amazon Kindle.  I think that caused some excitement."  No doubt there was a lot for the Meridian/Van Ausdall team to be excited about too.  Plans call for additional consolidation of efforts.  Stay tuned for more.

Definition of SaaS

by Guillermo Fernandez 15. October 2009 17:10

Gartner defines SaaS as "software that is owned, delivered and managed remotely by one or more providers. The provider delivers an application based on a single set of common code and data definitions, which are consumed in a one-to-many model by all contracted customers anytime on a pay-for-use basis, or as a subscription based on use metrics.”

EMR versus EHR

by Guillermo Fernandez 5. September 2009 16:56

If you're like me, you're been confused before about when to use the term "EMR" versus the use of "EHR".  Of course, EMR is an acronym for "Electronic Medical Record" and "EHR" stands for "Electronic Health Record".  The National Alliance for Health Information Technology (NAHIT) has generating a definition of each.  EMR has a more specific focus.  It’s a more in-depth record of a single diagnosis or treatment, and it tends to be more practical for specialists.  The, now, official definition is “the electronic record of health-related information on an individual that is created, gathered, managed, and consulted by licensed clinicians and staff from a single organization involved in the individual’s health and care.”

An EHR, on the other hand, is more comprehensive in scope and application. NAHIT defines EHR as “the aggregate electronic record of health-related information on an individual that is created and gathered cumulatively across more than one health care organization and is managed and consulted by licensed clinicians and staff involved in the individual’s health and care.”

WinScribe 4.0

by Guillermo Fernandez 19. August 2009 08:11

WinScribe has announced the release of its anticipated version 4.0.  This is a major release with exciting new functionality for WinScribe customers.  A new secretary client is designed to make identification of dictations easier, enhance team working and improve job filtering capabilities.  Additionally, the new version will improve a customer's ability to balance their workload by utilizing enhanced reporting tools.  Support for new devices and the ability to upload from new hardware will also improve the customers experience.

WinScribe has also improved its mobile solution by allowing a Blackberry client to be tethered, thus giving customers more options for dictation upload.  This means users will no longer have to rely on wireless as the sole method for dictation upload to the server.  The new platform will be available soon for deployment.  To view the WinScribe Press Release, follow the link provided below.

Dictation and the ASP

by Guillermo Fernandez 11. August 2009 01:01

An ASP, or Application Service Provider, is a business that provides software or computer based functionality over a network.  Also referred to as On-demand or SaaS, (Software as a Service), it is normal for the provider to issue specific application functionality, for a re-occurring fee, in place of software licensing.

So why have ASP’s gained popularity?  One reason is they rely on a foundational infrastructure that companies are already investing heavily in.  Today a company’s intranet and network infrastructure is among its most important IT priorities.  ASP’s rely on internet connectivity and today most companies view internet as a central business function, which means it is not included as a system cost.  Since servers, data storage and other associated costs are not needed with ASP's, customers have a very predictable expense model.

We know the associated costs of premise based systems can escalate.  In addition to Server and OS costs, a company will likely have database costs.  In addition, along with the server comes business continuity costs like malware protection and backups.  Other expenses included are the cost of IT people, administration training, space for equipment, electricity and software upgrades.  Most, if not all of these costs, including maintenance and installation of updates, can likely be deferred with an ASP.

So how does a Dictation ASP work?  Concepts vary, but it’s pretty straight forward.  In most cases, the exact same functionality that is incorporated into a premise based system can be found in a Dictation ASP.  The individual creating the voice recording may use a variety of equipment including handhelds, phone dictation and Blackberrys.  Jobs are tracked and voice recognition can also be utilized.  Fees for this service are usually predictable and based on the number of users.  There are typically no software license costs or upgrade fees as upgrades are normally built into the user fee.  Since upgrades are performed by the provider, the customer experiences very little hassle.

Sounds good, right?  Well there are other considerations.  For one, the customer usually has to accept the system as it is without much customization.  Additionally, the provider usually determines when the system will be upgraded for all customers.  Also, since the solution is internet based, if the customer’s connection to the internet is down, some or all of the functionality is likely lost until service is restored.

Is a Dictation ASP right for you, or does a premise based system make more sense?  You’ll need to evaluate the cost versus benefits.  Keep in mind that as the cost of data centers decreases and bandwidth quality of data improves, the viability of this strategy will come around.
